Der Zakarian and Furlan: exit and more?

After Peter Bosz was sacked on Sunday, two new Ligue 1 managers were fired within hours. Michel Der Zakarian (Stade Brestois) and Jean-Marc Furlan (AJ Auxerre) post disappointing results after just ten days. But is it really a good idea to replace them now?

After the predictable end of the adventure between Bosz and Olympique Lyonnais, a second explosion sounded in our beloved Ligue 1 with the dismissal of Michel Der Zakarian and his two assistants. The snowball effect does not end there, as Jean-Marc Furlan jumped only a few hours after his Brest counterpart.

fingers in the door

Der Zakarian, weakened by his red lantern (20me, two points behind the first players not relegated) and seven games without a win, leaves the Brest ship with the taste of a pending issue. Come last season, he had concluded his first term at the helm of Stade Brestois with a fairly convincing 11th place finish and the hope of putting Ty’Zefs in the top 10. The hiring of Grégory Lorenzi (sexy on paper: Lees – Melou, Dembélé, Pereira-Lage, Dari, Camara, Slimani) all struggled to take the field and the result only worsened after the slap against Montpellier at Le-Blé (7-0). Yet another defeat in the Breton derby against Lorient (1-2), and the words of Gérard Le Saint, co-chair of SB29, at the microphone of France Bleu Breizh Izelwill have condemned him: “Of course it was starting to get complicated. When you see the results… To this day, I think there has to be an osmosis between the different parts of the club. That’s life, the club continues. »

The eviction of Jean-Marc Furlan, the former Brestois, is more surprising. At the club since 2019, he had steered the club back to the top flight after an epic barrage against Saint-Étienne. The start of the championship had been quite good before a series of setbacks against the “big fish”. Nothing to be scared of, especially when you lose consecutively against teams like Lyon, Marseille or Rennes. Three games and a small point in the bag later, the middle finger addressed to Clermont supporters surely sealed its fate. The management of the Burgundy club (16me of Ligue 1) declared in a declaration “Sorry for the gesture of your coach” . Tensions are not new between the man in the cap and the meeting, particularly with regard to recruitment. Notified of his dismissal on Tuesday, the former Brest manager did not hide his disappointment at the method used by the Burgundian club to get rid of him: “The leaders use the pretext that I had this gesture of humor in Clermont, which I deeply regret. »

The only lever, really?

Whether for Der Zakarian or Furlan, the question now is who will they be replaced by? The game of musical chairs is a very French specialty, but the question of its interest arises. To date, no real successor seems to point the tip of his nose to take the lead from these two formations. For the Stade Brest, the triumvirate Bruno Grougi, Julien Lachuer and Yvan Bourgis temporarily replace the Franco-Armenian. Ty’Zefs’ former number 6 seems the best placed to take over the caretaker, but several stumbling blocks stand in his way: the current coach of National 3 is suspended after a red card received this weekend, which prevents him from being in the bench this Sunday in Nantes, and he doesn’t have all the diplomas to manage an L1 team. Furthermore, throwing this club legend into the background seems more than premature. On the Auxerre side, the names of Patrice Garande or Sabri Lamouchi circulate, but, for now, it is the deputy Michel Padovani who should be in charge. Another option, David Carré, the coach of B, has the diplomas to form the professional group and has already assumed the role of firefighter on duty at the club.

Hitting the ejection seat button seems early with 28 games and 84 points to play, especially without a plan B. These clubs certainly didn’t think they were playing in Europe at the start of the season and made such a drastic decision when the top 10 is only 4 or 6 points away may seem rushed. Ask yourself if the clubs only have this means of action to remedy a complex sporting situation. If the process is common in Ligue 1, in the past it has rarely borne fruit. Of the last eleven clubs relegated to Ligue 2, four of them have chosen to sack their manager after 10 days or less. Therefore, we are far from the miracle solution.
