Denon AVC-A1H: 15.4, HDMI 2.1, 8K UHD Upscaling, 360 Reality Audio, DTS:X Pro, Imax Enhanced, Auro 3D, HDR10+…

With the AVC-A1H, Denon announces a new version of its premium home theater amplifier. On the menu, 15 channels of amplification, four independent subwoofer outputs, fully functional integrated HDMI 2.1 connectors, a completely redesigned user interface, and a host of welcome new features to deliver the best of today’s technology.

Returning to the HDMI 2.1 standard, all seven inputs and three outputs benefit from 40 Gbps connectors and support all the standard’s features: VRR, ALLM, eARC, QMS, QFT, Ultra HD 4K at 120fps and UHD 8K at 60 frames . per second.

Denon AVC-A1H, main novelties

As for the new features on board this AVC‑A1H, thanks to the presence of fifteen discrete amplification channels, there is support for a Dolby Atmos 9.1.6 setup. An installation that can still evolve with the connection of four subwoofers through as many independent outputs. Similarly, the Dac evolves, the ESS Saber ES9010 (192kHz/32bit, 8ch) is replaced by the specimen ESS Saber ES9018K2M (384kHz/32bit, 10ch).

For its part, the double DSP Analog Devices ADSP‑21573 Shark+ is replaced by an ADSP‑21593 Shark+ and the capacitors are two proprietary models with a capacity of 33,000 microfarads. Also note a preamp mode that allows power amps to be connected to individually selected channels. Finally, compatibility with, on the one hand, the 360 Reality Audio sound processing developed by Sony, on the other hand, the Mpeg-H standard (a group of international standards that includes a video compression standard, an audio compression standard , a format container, as well as related documents), are required. That is, the Dirac Live calibration process is planned through an upcoming firmware update.

Main specifications of the Denon AVC-A1H

Otherwise, the Denon AVC-A1H seamlessly takes up the design of the Denon AVC-X8500H that appeared in 2018 and was updated in 2021 with the Denon AVC-X8500HA. There’s also the Imax Enhanced label, Auro 3D functionality, Upscaling of 1080p sources to UHD 4K (2160p) and UHD 8K (4320p), HDCP 2.3 certification for all HDMI inputs, HDR10+ and DTS:X Pro support, and Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer function.

All other technical features remain unchanged, namely triple-layer chassis (1.6mm thickness for bottom layer), cast-iron stand (329g each), web radio access, Bass Sync process for resetting the LFE channel on some multichannel tracks where it would be slightly delayed (this happens quite often) and DTS Virtual X mode to turn any soundtrack into a DTS:X track. This 15.4 model delivers 15 x 150W of power at 8 ohms (11.5kg R-Core high current transformer) and incorporates an analog to HDMI transcoder. The same goes for the management of DSD streams (up to 5.6 MHz) through the HDMI connectors, the assignment of one of the three HDMI outputs to HDMI zone 2 to output an audio-video signal different from the one in the room major. Of course, in addition to the Dolby Atmos 15.1.6 feature already mentioned, Dolby Atmos 13.1 (7.2.6/9.2.4) and DTS:X 11.2 (7.1.4/9.1.4/5.1.6) and Auro 3D 13.1 ( 7.1.6) are still valid. In other words, the seventeen terminals present on the back of the amplifier allow, once all are connected to a loudspeaker, to easily switch from one decoding to another, each of which requires a specific configuration.

Denon AVC-A1H, Heos multiroom function

Back on the menu, Heos multiroom functionality, management of HDR10, HDR10+, HDR HLG and HDR10 technologies), Dolby Vision also offers dynamic metadata (static in HDR10) based on the images displayed, for a more accurate representation in Bass and Highlight. Important, to enjoy Dolby Vision content, every link in the graphics chain must support Dolby Vision, from calibration to display.”> Dolby Vision HDR and BT.2020 range. To go back to Heos, this amplifier it can easily be transformed into a link in a larger audio chain, including real Denon Heos speakers to add sound to a home.

We also highlight the ISF certification, integrated Bluetooth compatibility, zone 2 and zone 3 stereo audio management, Audyssey MultEQ XT 32 acoustic correction and Audyssey Dynamic Volume, Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Audyssey LFC processing. The latter allows each sub to be configured as part of a dual-sub setup, for deeper, more accurate bass.

Denon AVC-A1H, connectivity

Still on the menu of the Denon AVC‑A1H, an audio restore mode to optimize sound playback of compressed audio files, an associated audio and photo UPnP (DLNA) media gateway with MP3, WMA, AAC support , Wav and Flac and AirPlay certification. There is also Wi-Fi compatibility, powered USB Host port on the front with direct and digital management of an iPod/iPhone (iBidule charging is guaranteed), the ability to enjoy online music services such as Spotify (Spotify Connect compatibility) o Last Streaming .fm, Gapless function and AIFF format support. We also note the label Roon Tested (therefore the Roon application is compatible with the product and adapts the quality of the audio stream reading to the capabilities of the device).

Of course, Dolby TrueHD and DTS‑HD decoders are also present, not to mention Auto LipSync or the ability to control the amp from an Android/iOS smartphone or tablet via the Denon Remote app. An Audyssey app is also available (for a fee, €20) to optimize settings and save multiple complete settings to a smartphone/tablet or to the Cloud. Also noteworthy is the support for 4-ohm speakers for even more advanced ergonomics and DDSC HD compatibility with the new multi-channel Processing Multi Channel AL32.

Denon AVC-A1H, general appearance

The AVC-A1H is finished with a 100% aluminum front and heavy steel side panels. The OSD, 1080p color (and not 480p), changes radically. There is now a lot of information available on the screen, in particular about the nature of the input and output signals with, for example, the actually active channels. The same goes for the four quick-select buttons on the front, which always make it quick and easy to access the desired source. Precision, the latter also integrate additional functions and modes (Audyssey or multi-room management) for increasingly complete macros.

Denon AVC-A1H, connectivity

The connection therefore includes seven HDMI CEC 2.1 inputs, HDCP 2.3 certified and all transparent to 3D, Ultra HD 4K and 8K, Deep Color, xvYCC and 1080p/24 signals). As already mentioned, the eARC feature is also included. There are also two optical, two coaxial, six stereo RCA inputs, one of which is dual XLR (the audio CD input), one Phono, one stereo zone 2 output, one stereo RCA zone 3 output, one Pre-Out 16.1 , two USB Host ports (including one on the front), one headphone output, one Audyssey MultEQ XT 32 auto-calibration mic input, and one Ethernet port. Plus two 12V trigger sockets, one RS-2323 socket, and seventeen pairs of terminal blocks. Finally, a remote control accompanies the AVC‑A1C.

Also note the different colored terminal blocks to match the wires, to make it easy to connect the speakers. Finally, the Eco mode is still just as efficient for reasonable listening. Power saving is on average 40% on this AVC‑A1C.

Availability in stores, in black or silver, planned for March 2023. Indicative price not yet known. If we know that it should be around €7,000, the price could change between now and next spring, depending on the events of the war in Ukraine.
