Denon AVC-X3800H: 9.4, 8K UHD Upscaling, 360 Reality Audio, DTS: X Pro, Imax Enhanced, Auro 3D, HDR10+, Heos…

Continuation of our review of the new range of Home Cinema 2022 amplifiers signed by Denon. After the Denon AVR-X2800HDAB and the Denon AVC-A1H, it is time for the presentation of the Denon AVC-X3800H, a 9.4 model.

Like the rest of the audio-video amplifier models presented by the brand this year, the Denon AVC-X3800H has evolved significantly compared to its predecessor, the Denon AVC-X3700H.

Denon AVC-X3800H, main novelties

As for the AVC-A1H, the Denon AVC-X3800H allows the connection of four subwoofers through as many independent outputs, against two on the AVC-X3700H. Similarly, the DAC is changing, the AKM4458 is replaced by a Texas Instrument PCM5102A (384kHz/32bit, 8ch). For its part, the DSP is an example of Analog Devices ADSP‑21593 Shark+ (as in the AVC‑A1H, (see image below) and model capacitors with a capacity of 12,000 microfarads. Preamp mode allows this year to connect power amps to individually selected channels. Note also a new HD and color graphical interface, as well as compatibility with the 360 Reality Audio sound processing developed by Sony, on the one hand, the Mpeg-H standard (a group of international standards that includes a video compression standard , an audio compression one, a container format standard, as well as related documents) on the other hand. That is, the Dirac Live calibration process is planned through an upcoming firmware update.

Denon AVC-X3800H Main Specifications

For the rest, apart from the absence of a tuner [abc]ATM[/abc], there are a total of nine channels of amplification (11.4 processing) and a power showing 105 W under 8 ohms (180 W under 6 ohms). There’s also a Pre‑Out 11.4 output and Imax Enhanced support. Similarly, Audyssey MultEQ XT 32 and Audyssey LFC processing are still required, as is the third HDMI output (allowing you to enjoy a different source than the one assigned to the main room in another room).

Of course, it is always possible to apply all available audio processing to a Dolby signal. Therefore, it is now possible to use DTS Virtual:X on a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. And going back to the input and the two HDMI 2.1 outputs, they support all the features of the standard: VRR, ALLM, eARC, QMS, QFT, Ultra HD 4K 120 fps up to Ultra HD 8K 60Hz Upscaling (see our HDMI 2.1 standard news, official, technical and ergonomic additions welcome).

Denon AVC-X3800H, the continuation of the main specifications

For the rest, we thus find a discrete 9.4 configuration, Dolby Atmos 9.1.4 processing, Dolby Height Virtualization and DTS:X Pro and DTS:X 11.1 (with the addition of an external stereo amplifier), Auro 3D decoding, the Bluetooth TX function to transmit the audio signal to suitable headphones in addition to the speakers. It is therefore possible to enjoy your music on speakers in the living room, but also in the kitchen or bedroom via wireless headphones.

Also present is the possibility of taking advantage of multichannel decoding in the main zone (the living room for example) and simultaneously outputting the downmixed signal in stereo in the Heos 2 and 3 zones, the ability to associate in the main zone with a signal video (that of DTT for example), an audio signal from another source (for example that of an audio CD). Finally, thanks to the integrated Heos multi-room module, the Denon AVC‑X3800H offers the option within a Heos setup to distribute a source to another link in the Heos chain.

Other technical characteristics

On the menu again for the Denon AVC-X3800H, Spotify Connect certification, AirPlay 2 features, Dual Band Wi-Fi and TuneIn web radios, UPnP (DLNA) audio gateway, Amazon Music compatibility, Deezer, Sound Cloud, Tidal … Plus DSD 2.8/5.6 MHz, Flac, Wav, and Alac support up to 192 kHz/24-bit as well as MP3, WMA, and AAC, and 4- or 8-ohm output impedance management. Not to mention support for the paid Audyssey MultiEQ Editor app and two subwoofer outputs (in parallel).

Specifically, the Audyssey calibration authorizes this year to store two different configurations in memory, for example 2.0 and 9.1.2, or even the result of the Audyssey calibration and a custom MultiEQ curve, with the possibility of selecting one or the other in the fly to compare them.

On the HDR side, of course, there’s support for HDR10, HDR10+, HDR HLG, and HDR10), Dolby Vision also offers dynamic metadata (static in HDR10) depending on the images displayed, for more accurate rendering in low and high light conditions. light. Important, to enjoy Dolby Vision content, every link in the graphics chain must support Dolby Vision, from calibration to display”.> HDR Dolby Vision, not forgetting BT.2020 gamut management. requires the 4K Pass-Through function. Accuracy, the Denon AVC-X3800H is certified Roon Tested (see our news 59 Denon and Marantz products compatible with Roon).

Alexa, Google and Siri voice assistants

In 2020, as in 2019, Denon’s line of AV amplifiers boasts many advanced features, including compatibility with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri voice assistants. Denon, along with Marantz, is the only brand, along with Sonos, to have all three protocols in one device for hands-free control of the amp and streaming services.

Manufacturing and ergonomics optimized

Already mentioned, we notice an OSD, color 1080p (and not 480p). There is now a lot of information available on the screen, in particular about the nature of the input and output signals with, for example, the actually active channels. The same goes for the four quick-select buttons on the front, which always make it quick and easy to access the desired source. Precision, the latter also integrate additional functions and modes (Audyssey or multi-room management) for increasingly complete macros. We still note optimized manufacturing to reduce signal path and interference risks.

As for connectivity, there are six HDMI CEC 2.1 inputs, HDCP 2.3 certified and compatible up to Ultra HD 2160p/60 and 4320p/60 in 4:4:4. These are transparent to Deep Color, xvYCC and 3D signal. Not to mention the three HDMI 2.1 outputs already mentioned.

There are also two optical, two coaxial, six stereo RCA inputs, one Phono input, one Pre-Out 2.0 (zone 2) output, one Pre-Out 11.4 output, one headphone output, one RS-232 jack, one Trigger output 12V, a front USB Host port, an Ethernet port plus four subwoofer outputs. Control of the Denon AVC‑X3800H is of course possible via the free Heos app.

Availability, only in black, immediate. Indicative price: 1,699 euros.
