A new Marvel-branded game is coming to mobile and PC in October 2022. The Avengers have had plenty of adventures in these mediums, but (too) rarely in card games. With Marvel Snap, it’s done. Here are the JV editorial team’s first impressions of Maison des Idées’ latest video game creation available in early access.

What is Marvel Snap?

marvel snap is a Free to Play (or CCG for Collectible Cards Game) card game developed by Second Dinner and intended for mobile devices (iOS and Android) as well as PC through the online store “Steam”. The title offers a unique game mode, 1v1 arena battles, with games structured around capturing three areas. During six timed rounds, the two opponents try to take control with large reinforcements of superheroes and villains from said zones that also have various attributes. This ranges from the impossibility of placing cards after turn X to the increase in power through many other singularities that we will discover throughout your card duels.

our first impressions

Marvel Snap is meant to be accessible to as many people as possible, whether you’re a fan or a total card game neophyte. It goes without saying that those who have spent dozens of hours in Hearthstone & Co. will have a distinct advantage when they land on the Second Dinner title, which recaptures the core principles of the genre to make them their own. This results in short, rhythmic parts that look just right… even if the randomness adds its own little grain of salt at times.a grain of salt that will probably shake strategists in search of control.

This CCG also stands out with its modern comic-inspired visuals. After spending a few hours on Marvel Snap, It is undeniable that special attention has been paid to the creation of the cards. The opposite would have been surprising since the latter make all the charm of the title, even beyond the playful experience, which is mainly based on the compilation of the most emblematic superheroes and villains of Marvel. You can even improve the appearance of cards by using them in combat. Otherwise, players alternate during a Marvel Snap session between upgrading their various decks and dueling online to put their new team of supers to the test.

A pay-to-win game?

Free to Play required, Marvel Snap offers several in-app purchases that, at first glance, only make it easy to get new cards and thus complete your collection of Marvel roster characters. Difficult to comment on the Pay to Win dimension (or not) of this CCG that seems generous to us during the first sessionslike any good F2P worth its salt, but that seems to avoid some of the main pitfalls inherent in its economic model.

There is no need to pay to compete and even beat other players. The simple fact of playing allows you to improve your cards, obtain new ones and even collect the different in-game currencies thanks to the Season Pass (Credits, Gold, etc.). We’re certainly on familiar ground with Marvel Snap for all things microtransactions, but their economic policy isn’t really very aggressive. Building your deck comes naturally without necessarily reaching into your pocket…unless you’re naturally impatient.
