news culture Cyberpunk Edgerunners season 2: CD Projekt’s definitive answer for Netflix anime
An unmissable hit in the Netflix catalog, the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime has won over many fans. Most of them returned to the video game version of Night City enjoying their new journey. Will there be a second season?
- “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a stand-alone work”
- “I don’t know if it would be season 2 or something completely different”
“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a stand-alone work”
In an interview with Famitsu (broadcast by VideoGamesChronicle), the manager of CD Projekt in Japan, Satoru Honma, spoke about the future of Cyberpunk: Edge Runners. The anime, available since September 13 on Netflix, has been received more than positively around the world. A new success for an animated adaptation of a video game (neck to neck with Arcane, the LoL series) that allowed to give a second opportunity to Cyberpunk 2077 and its chaotic launch. Some viewers even see Edgerunners as “the best advertising possible“for Cyberpunk 2077 which is the origin of the renewed popularity of Night City.
On the web, gamers even shared their excitement by helping each other find anime references in the game: the David Martinez cocktail, Rebecca’s guns or David’s jacket are found in the game, while some have expressed their desire to take revenge on the anime’s big bad through many hilarious statements. In any case, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will have been talked about, and sadly, Season 2 doesn’t seem to be on the schedule. It is Satoru Honma who indicates it:
I would personally like to continue working with Japanese studios to produce another anime in the future, especially since we have received very good feedback (…) However, to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as “we’re currently working on season 2 in the background.”.

“I don’t know if it would be season 2 or something completely different”
Unfortunately, we clearly shouldn’t expect to see a new Cyberpunk 2077 anime in the immediate future during the episode (especially for those having discovered the most tearful secret put in the end credits). A second season would probably look totally different, as Satoru Honma suggested:
Even if we could do more anime in the future, I don’t know if it would be season 2 or something else entirely.
In any case, Honma also adds that he is grateful to the Trigger studio (source of the excellent Darling in the FranXX Y kill prey) for giving people a second chance to appreciate V and Johnny Silverhand’s story after the anime. Especially since with the recent announcements, Night City is not going to turn off the lights: the Liberty expansion is scheduled for next year, while a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is also in the works from the Polish studio.
