The 16-pin connector could damage the RTX 4090

In the images posted by the two users, we see the graphics card’s 16-pin PCIe 5.0 connectors that have simply melted. This is the first time that an Nvidia graphics card has requested this type of connector to power the beast, as it requires no less than 450W to run.
The 16-pin connector (12VHPWR) completely destroyed the connection of his RTX 4090, while the graphics card already costs more than €2000 alone. User Reggie_gakil says that he was playing Red Dead Redemption II, a game that requires a lot of resources, and then says that he saw smoke coming out of his case, until the connector started to catch fire.
On the NoDuelsPolicy side, the player was playing Black Desert before encountering a black screen mid-game. Nothing as alarming as Reggie, but his graphics card stopped working before he noticed his power port was burned.
What do these users have in common? They both use an RTX 4090 that only supports 16-pin connectors (12+4). One has an RTX 4090 Gigabyte Gaming OC and the other an Asus TUF Gaming. This means that the graphics card itself has no problem, and the problem lies in the power consumption that the RTX 4090 requires.
Beware, these problems may have been caused by very specific cases and do not mean that all RTX 4090 are dangerous. It is difficult to speculate on these facts, and although the images provided by users show us its main 12-pin connectors well damaged.
Are Nvidia connectors not developed yet?
According to the Wccftech site, the problem could be caused by the thickness of the 16-pin connector, which would indirectly cause overheating issue for the PC. The RTX 4090 is huge, as are its cables, and you’ll need to invest in a bigger case if you don’t want to suffer the same fate as the users mentioned above.
If cable management is not your forte, you will have to work hard with this RTX 4090 since the power that the machine requires requires special care. In fact, this can affect the ventilation of your computer and unfortunately cause it to overheat.
Even if you decide to buy an RTX 4090, be patient and do the best cable management you’ve ever done for optimal cooling. It would be foolish to throw $2,000 out the window.
