EDF presents solutions to avoid power outages this winter 2022!

France is on high alert ! The risk of power outages has never been as high as for winter 2022 – 2023 what is coming right now. To limit the risk, or even avoid it, the operator of the electricity transmission network, RTE, proposes the ecowatt device. The latter also requires sobriety in terms of electricity consumption.

“Sobriety”, this is currently the word that is on everyone’s lips regarding the energy crisis that France is experiencing. Finding the balance between superfluous consumption and the satisfaction of needs is the most important lever to achieve a low energy consumption society. The goal is also to avoid power outages. However, Marc Benayoun, executive director of EDF, estimated that at the electrical level there was ” very strong opportunity » that France spends the winter without incident.

Avoid power outages

In the current context, France’s energy transition is one of the government’s top priorities. France must get out of its dependence on fossil fuels and reduce its energy consumption by 40% by 2050.

“Sobriety Is Here To Settle”alerted the Government when presenting its energy saving plan for the winter on Thursday, October 6. From public services to companies, through sports and housing, dozens of measures are planned to deal with it.

Thus, the Ecowatt system was implemented by RTE and the French Agency for Environmental and Energy Management (ADEME). Alerts consumers when electricity consumption is too high to promote “eco-gestures” and avoid power outages. The winter of 2022 promises to be tense on the subject.

Attention ! in terms of electricity the surveillance period will begin in the fall and last for several months. ” When the electrical system is highly stressed, the risk of outages cannot be completely excluded. But it could be avoided. Reducing national consumption between 1 and 5% in most cases. And up to 15% in the most extreme climatic situations”, explained the manager of the electrical transmission network.

Xavier Piechaczyk, President of the Executive Board of RTE, considers however that ” we can eliminate much of the risk if we are very proactive with sobrietyas well as the mobilization around the red Ecowatt signal during consumption peaks”.

The ecowatt device

In concrete terms, the Ecowatt device indicates if there is a risk of tension in the French electrical network. That is to say that the consumption is greater than the electricity available, in real time, but also in the next three days.

“Each of us has the power to reduce electricity consumption in France by taking simple actions. Ecowatt allows you to know the moments in which eco-gestures have the greatest impact on the electrical system. By changing certain uses, you are helping to guarantee everyone’s electricity supply during periods of supply stress. Let’s take the right steps! » declare correctly the Ecowatt system website. This site also provides valuable tips to prevent the French from often being in the dark.

Marc Benayoun, executive director of EDF in charge of the division of clients, services and territories, participated this Wednesday in a round table on the security of energy supply in the Senate. Also in attendance were TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné and Engie CEO Catherine MacGregor.

Voluntary outages and power outages

France has a potential for voluntary interruptions in electricity consumption (outage) of 5 to 6 gigawatts (GW) that could allow it to avoid power cuts this winterMarc Benayoun said, before the Committee on Economic Affairs of the Senate.

The country is at risk of having to cut its electricity consumption over the coming winter to avoid targeted power outages amid heightened tensions over security of supply.warned RTE in mid-September.

“If we are sure of very cold temperatures, with a power demand of 90 GW at peak hours… 5-6 GW can be 5-6% power. And this is what can help avoid load loss right now,” said Marc Benayoun. “There has not been a blackout in France since 1978. And although we are in a very difficult situation, there are still very high chances that we will make it through the winter without loss of charge“, he added.

And to the executive director to remember: “ If the gas reserves are normally full, and it looks good, you should know that the trigger temperatures, which put the electrical system at risk (…) remain at -4°C for several days. Last year we had such a cold snap. Luckily, it was between Christmas and New Years. At a time when consumption was low and therefore there were no problems”;

The “deletions” that Marc Benayoun evokes are voluntary interruptions of consumption. They are based on remuneration systems and price incentives.

Marc Benayoun also indicated that EDF was targeting an increase of around 1 GW in demand response capacities. And it will do so within its own client portfolio, which today amounts to a total of approximately 2 GW.

This senior EDF executive also indicated that, in the context of very high prices, a large number of clients were returning to EDF after having used the competition for several years.

Many returning customers in all segments. Alternative providers aren’t doing very well, apart from the very big ones of course (.). We will end 2022 with a higher market share than at the beginning of the year. And it’s been a long time since that happened.“Marc Benayoun said.
